More Silly Things Gavin Says

During a picnic in the yard this week, Gavin disappeared into the house for a few minutes. When he returned, he ran from the house to our picnic blanket carrying a large wooden spoon from the kitchen and as he ran past the rest of us on the picnic blanket, he handed me the big wooden spoon and said "Hee'a go. In case you needa cook sumpin!" ...apparently he thought we needed a wooden spoon for our picnic.

One evening, my niece D and I were sitting in my kitchen visiting while Gavin was quietly and contently playing in the living room, driving his tractors, no doubt. We were amazed at now content he was playing by himself and I even commented how nice it is that at this age he plays on his own more and more. After a while, we got up to go get Gavin's bath ready, and as we came into the living room, we saw that the heavy 10' x 12' living room rug was folded over - almost in half - from two of the corners! This is a rug that is so big and heavy that I have to roll it up one side at a time in order to clean the floors under it. I certainly can't lift it by myself. Gavin had it folded in half and was driving his tractors over it. In shock and surprise, I said "What happened in here???" to which Gavin stood and turned toward me, put his hands up in the air, and very matter of factly said "Me! Diss is fwum me!"

Gavin recently discovered that one of his stuffed animals is actually a hand puppet. It's a Mallard Drake and if you put your hand inside, you can flap his wings and make his duck-bill open and close. Gavin ran out of his room with his duck and said, "Mom, wook! I can put mine hand in his butt!"

While laying in bed one morning, Gavin snuggling up next to me, one of those yawn-induced tears rolled from my eye down the side of my face toward my pillow. Gavin looked at it and said "Why you have a dweam on yo face?"
Me: "Did you just ask why I have a dream on my face?"
G: "Yeah, you have a dweam wight heo on yo cheek", pointing at the tear.
Me: "Do you mean this tear?"
G: "Yeah, dat teo"
Me: "Sometimes when we yawn, a tear comes out of our eyes and I just yawned."
G: "Oh"

and speaking of using the wrong word... apparently compound words like lawnmower can be confusing to a two year old. We say sometimes that we're going to mow the lawn or we ask Gavin if he wants to ride the lawnmower with us. Apparently, the words lawn and mow are now interchangable...
He asks sometimes if we can "wahn the gwass". The first couple of times I had no idea what he was talking about and when I guessed incorrectly, he would say louder and more intensely, "no, waahhhhhhn the gwass" "waaahhhhhhn it wiss the wahnmowo". I finally figured out that he meant mow the grass... with the lawnmower.

...but as silly as wahning the gwass sounds, he's smarter than we give him credit for. He has very recently started hitting again when he is mad at us or is being forced to do something he doesn't want to do, like come in the house when he wants to stay outside and play, or when a cousin or play mate tries to take a toy from him. He hadn't hit anyone in such a long time and had finally outgrown it, but his little cousin is just entering that phase in toddlerhood and I think it's bringing it back in Gavin, although hopefully just temporarily. So, the other day, we were playing and giggling and he had decided he had enough of it and he hit me right in the nose, pretty hard. I looked at him and reminded him that we don't hit and that if he wanted me to stop playing he should just ask me to. Then I asked him to say sorry to me and try to remember next time to just ask me. He got this sly little grin and said, "but I was jist twyin' a cwap yo hand". Little smarty-pants!
